In part 1 of our Entertain Yourself series we took a look at the Sony BRAVIA NX800 3D HDTV. It’s our pick for amazing picture quality, industrial design, and packs a wallop of future proof technologies to take you far beyond 2010. Tho the built-in speakers are a wonder in themselves we wanted dedicated speakers. Last year we came across the Jamo A 804 and have been in love ever since.

A beautiful television demands an equally beautiful speaker system. If you take a look at what’s available on the market, speakers are either 80’s industrial boxes or beautifully crafted modern exercises. The former is all performance with no thought to design and the latter is just the opposite, too much design with subpar acoustics. Is there a happy medium?

Take one look at the A 804 – it’s gorgeous! The piano black finish is accented with black leather; fluidic yet technical in appearance. The size is dominating but well suited to Sony’s new monolithic design aesthetic. It’s absolutely stunning and only enhances the entertainment area. Speakers don’t have to be hidden. They can be proudly displayed and the A 804 is more than capable of holding its own amongst the best hardware makers and designers in the industry.

Prior to installing the A 804, we were using a Yamaha Sound Bar which we LOVE. The simulated 5.1 audio system is just the ticket for something better than stereo. The A 804 can function as a single, double, or a full on 5+ speaker setup and it’s the versatility that’ll make any audio guru happy. Unlike other speaker systems, you don’t need a full blown out package to get massive sound. We only have two A 804’s and a subwoofer and we’re more than elated. You will need a receiver to drive the speakers. We’re using a Pioneer model but even when hooked up to a small Denon unit, the sound was full, crisp, and balanced between the high, mids, and lows.

The A 804 is a 3-way, bassreflex speaker. The rigid cabinet constructed from high-gloss, lacquered aluminum, steel and high-density polymer results in a stable, non-resonant cabinet with very clean sound reproduction. One of the secrets of the A 804 lies in its flow-optimized bass port, which delivers extremely clean bass, even at high volume. The silk dome midrange/tweeter is a Jamo developed co-axial unit featuring WaveGuide technology. The clever three-way construction of the A 804 produces a perfect sound dispersion pattern, giving you maximum freedom when positioning your flatscreen, surround system and sofa. Its hard to visualize but sit anywhere around the TV and you never hear the sound drop off. It’s continuous and rich from the farthest corner of our seating arrangement. Sitting dead center is no longer the hottest seat in the house. Everyone gets to enjoy the almost pliable audio experience.

The REAL, I said. The REAL one. This is the one where you learn a real, actual, applicable beyond the game skill. Habeeb it! The designer of this project had the idea stop upon his mind-grapes while he was watching friends jam upon Guitar Hero and Rock Band all day long. He thought hey, they’re so good at this, but they can’t play a real guitar at all! Well wouldn’t you know it, he was (and is!) an industrial designer so he pumped up his muscles and got to work creating what he calls “Vision.”

Vision is a self-teaching electric guitar. It’s an LED-lit neck and body working in unison with guitar learning software. Tune is always tune, reducing the time a student uses on this elementary task. Vision teaches through games involving visual and audio feedback. Chords, percussion, and popular music are played alongside the student to provide easy assistance, allowing the student to become familiar with the instrument in an environment they’re basically already used to.

Connect to a computer with Bluetooth, plug in an amp, or go unplugged with battery. Gameplay is very similar to popular guitar games out now where students complete levels, difficulties, and unlock challenges.

Connecting to an amp allows the student to play uninhibited. The guitar has regular tone and volume knobs as well as a built-in effects system.

Unplugged works on rechargeable batteries, LED lit fretboard and rear-mounted speaker allow the student to practice or play portably.

The guitar comes standard with several interchangeable bodies to appease any weirdly shaped person.

There’s a paradigm shift in the science of food. Fifteen ago proper nutrition meant augmenting the kind of foods you ate. Buzz words like low-carb, low-cal, non-fat, low-glycemic, organic, and natural made their way into our vocabulary and yet we’re becoming fatter and unhealthier. Philips Design envisions a range of products that not only identify the true contents of food, but also how it affects your individual body.

The Diagnostic Kitchen enables people to take a much more accurate and personally relevant look at what they eat. The system is comprised of a tabletop, scanning wand, and swallowable sensor. The wand is an interactive device that gives you real time data about what’s going on inside your body, everything from salt to water ratio, hydration, fats, proteins, etc… By docking the wand and placing a food item you might eat on the tabletop, the wand updates to show how this item will affect your body.

The end goal is finding equilibrium. As you continue to use the system, you’ll gain an understanding of how food really affects you. As you find balance, the wand keeps a visual record of your progress and displays it across the surface. This is a provocative and unconventional look at food but one that can have a profound effect on how we eat. Imagine what that wand would look like if you placed a Big Mac with fries and a coke on the tabletop. The damn thing would probably explode.

15) New Orleans Arcology Habitat or NOAH by E. Kevin Schopfer AIA, RIBA & Tangram 3DS; Kittery, ME

NOAH proposes to be a habitat for 40,000 residents who can benefit from the planned residential units, school system, commercial, retail, hotels, casinos, parking, and public works facilities. Its triangle shape is most captivating and literally stands out on the waterfront. Quite a design challenge actually, this place needs to overcome both the physical and psychological damages of recurring severe weather patterns.

14) Eko by 10 Raisons Architects

Critics may pan it for getting inspired by the romantic Eiffel Tower, but the giant Eko looks like a tower with webs on the side. It boasts of 24 floors, 8500 Square meters of Nano Solar, 350 palms, a bar, a library and a big exhibition hall and is proposed as a futuristic housing high-rise for Zaabeel Park, City Center in Dubai.

13) Campus Center for Miami Dade College by Oppenheim Architects

If Polo is the mint with a hole, then the Miami Dade College is a Super Building Campus Center for Miami Dade College is the architectural version of it. The high rise combines apartments, offices, educational facilities, and a lot of space for art exhibition. It’s supposed to get completed in the next two years time, can anyone in Miami confirm this?

12) Guggenheim Hermitage Museum by Zaha Hadid

Conceptualized as a floating structure above the fluid landscape in Vilnius, Lithuania, the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum is the renowned firm Zaha Hadid Architects’ brainchild. Featuring glossy, metallic surfaces, this building is a visual treat for true connoisseurs.

11) Klein Bottle House by McBride Charles Ryan

The “Klein Bottle” is a non-orientable surface, i.e., a surface (a two-dimensionaltopological space) with no distinction between the “inside” and “outside” surfaces. By constantly challenging our sense of perception, depth, linear orientation, interior/exterior space and pretty much any notion of what a dwelling should look like, the architects have successfully created a space that is surprisingly inviting and warm.

10) Torre Bicentenario by Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA)

Resembling 2 inverted pyramids bridged by a lobby where shuttles and elevators pass thru, the Torre Bicentenario is slated become the tallest building in Latin America. Completion is scheduled for this year to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Mexico’s Independence. Two voids penetrate the building at its widest point providing ventilation and natural light.

9) Dancing Towers by Zaha Hadid

With the spate of earthquakes hitting our foundations this year, the thought of dancing towers is not so appealing. Keeping aside such fears, these three towers are inter-twinned to share programmatic elements and rotate to maximize the views from the site towards the creek and neighboring developments. Another visual treat that defies common norms.

Another Zaha Hadid gem that looks to mesmerize us with soft curves and defining structure.

7) The Cube at Dubai Sports City

When we see ambitious projects like The Palm and The Cube here, we can totally understand why Dubai went under the real-estate scare recently. Is proposed to be a five-star condo hotel, an eye catcher at the Dubai Sports City.

6) Seoul Commune 2026 by Mass Studies

When you want to cite an example of how to marry nature with tall buildings, please refer the Seoul Commune 2026. It’s the case where you can negate the concrete jungle effect with a little help from Mother Nature!

5) Expocenter Project by Zaha Hadid

Yes Zaha Hadid is a staple at YD, what can we say…phenomenal works do warrant appreciation and here’s another feather in the Hadid cap! The Expocenter Project offers Moscow city a new exposition venue, hotel, and residential development. Tall and long beautifully combined.

4) Millennium Tower World Business Center (WBCB) in Busan by Asymptote

Asymptote won the contract to build this tower based on its ground breaking design of three separate tapered towers rising out of a robust and powerful base. This one can be filed under sculptural beauty.

3) Trump International Hotel and Tower Dubai by Nakheel & Atkins

With Trump attached to any property you can expect sheer extravaganza and nothing else! Likewise this 60-storey building features two asymmetrical halves forming a gateway to the Palm Islands of Jumeirah. The stainless steel, glass and stone faded arch-like structure includes a 300-room five-star hotel, 400 residential apartments, boutique offices, retail, gym and spa, restaurants and of course, access to private beaches.

2) Gateway Building for Ras Al-Khaimah by Snohetta

Like an oasis in the hot arid desert, the Gateway Building for Ras Al-Khaimah greets you with the magic and charm of the Arabs. A gateway to the city Ras Al-Khaimah, expect a Congress Center, Exhibition Halls, Shopping Center, and elite hotels in this complex.

1) Abu Dhabi Performing Arts Centre by Zaha Hadid

Zaha Hadid Architects does it once again with the spectacular Abu Dhabi Performing Arts Center. Fluid lines that transcend and meander through spaces to actually construct a Performing Arts Center! Its been described as a sculptural form that emerges from a linear intersection of pedestrian paths within the cultural district, gradually developing into a growing organism that sprouts a network of successive branches.
