Deep Sea Exploring

March 10th, 2010 Techno Wizkid No comments

Fluke is a diving robot designed for the deep abyss. The data collected serves to deepen our understanding of the ocean as an ecosystem. The research probes are equipped with flexible, pressure-resistant carriers suitable for holding various sensors in order to prepare for the respective missions. Extremely effective and featuring reduced energy consumption, the low-complexity drive system concept is based on the movements of a fish and can be manufactured affordably.

Auto + USBoombox Vinyl Toy

Auto with usboombox1 Auto + USBoombox Vinyl Toy
Most vinyl toys, while highly collectible, don’t really do a whole lot other than just sit there looking really cool. Not so with the friendly looking retro style Auto + USBoombox by French artist Superdeux, available from Kidrobot. The boombox can sit on top of the cassette tape figure’s head and opens up to reveal a hidden 1GB USB flash drive with an exclusive soundtrack on it. So maybe it’s not transforming into some crazy fighting robot that battles evil robots while defending a glowing cube, but at least it does do a little something extra for your money. Speaking of money, these run $60 each.

Robot Lovers, Spike Jonze, and Absolut

February 24th, 2010 Techno Wizkid No comments

Lovers of indy video, robot heads, and the masterful mind of master director Spike Jonze, you’re in for a treat. Spike Jonze has created a short film, “I’m Here,” about how enriched a life can become having been introduced to creativity – in a female robot. It’s the story of the male robot librarian who is gaining this enriched life, the adventurous, free spirited lady robot who helps him, and a little bit of music too! Moonrats to the rescue!

Well check it out: one member of the Moonrats, Aska Matsumiya, along with Yeah Yeah Yeah’s guitarist Nick Zinner, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist Flea, and bookstore owner* David Kramer form a fake band that go by the title The Lost Trees. In this movie they play a song called “There Are Many of Us”, written and sung by Matsumiya, that incidentally is also for sale already on iTunes.

*David Kramer owns lovely bookshop “Family” in the LA, CA area, where the characters in this film “I’m Here” play out their lives. You’ll notice the famous Absolut Vodka copyright information on the trailer here because they were kind enough to make this whole project possible.

Find out more about this project soon at http://www.absolut.com/uk and watch the trailer on YouTube or below, then take note at the amazing news for all you UK residents out there:

Zibits Mini R/C Robots

Zibits Mini R/C Robots

zibits Zibits Mini R/C Robots
Senario has just announced a new remote controlled robot toy called Zibits. These small little robots come in 12 different models and will retail for $9.99 when they are released in mid-March (look for them in Toy ‘R Us and elsewhere).

Senario sent one over for us to play around with and it was a pretty good distraction. The robot lights up and makes blipping and bleeping robotic sounds. The remote is bi-directional- up makes the Zibit go forward and down makes it spin in a circle in place. While the spinning makes it a little tricky to steer, I can see the challenge of it adding to kid’s fun as they race against each other. Check out our video

Yeah the lesson is that it’s hard to maintain focus with the iPhone camera and control an RC robot at the same time. Zibits pocket size and low price are attractive and might just make this the hot toy of 2010. We’ll see.

iPhone Robot Case

iphone robot case iPhone Robot Case
This iPhone case might not be the most practical one ever, especially if you plan on putting your phone in your pocket but it’s definitely pretty sweet. It would look pretty cool sitting on your desk and basically turn your iPhone into a really expensive robot toy. It was designed by Antonio Dejes and displayed at the Toy Fair 2010- can’t find any pricing or availability on it (sorry).
