Sobi2 Favourite Searches and Listings

March 14th, 2010 php No comments

Sobi2 Favourite Searches and ListingsSobi2 Favourites Plugin for Joomla fills a great gap in Sobi functionality…. The ability to save listing items and user searches.

Key features of this plugin include:
* Save Sobi entries to you Favourites: You can easily add a favourites link on both your detailed and v-card views. Simply edit your template and put in the appropriate place.
* Save Sobi searches to you Favourites: When performing searches, a save search button will automatically appear that allows the user to save the current search for future use.
* View and Administer your favourite Searches and Entries: Sobi2 Favorite Plugin is totally integrated with Sobi2 such that when viewing and administering your favorite listings, the listings will automatically be displayed in your standard v-card format. Much in a similar way to what Mosets Tree does.
* Edit saved searches: You can now use edit in place to rename your saved searches
* Redirect users: If a user tries to add a listing to their favourites and is not logged in or registered, they will be redirected to either the standard joomla signup page or a custom page of your choice. This is a good way to encourage users to signup to your site. You can also include menu links that will again take the user to the login/register page should they not already be registered.
* Easy to install: Sobi2 Favourites plugin is a native Sobi plugin, so to install it, simply log into your Joomla installation and go to Sobi2 > Plugins > Plugin Manager. Here you click the Browse button and find the plugin on your computer and then click Install
* Multilingual Support: Currently only the translation for English is done, however, to get Sobi2 Favourites in your own language, all you have to do is translate the language file which which contains all the text needed already in plain simple english.
* Interval Search Support: Sobi Favorites is designed to be compatible with Interval Search plugin which allows you extra flexibility for searches.

==Patch Files and UTF-8 Characters==

Most patch files are for PHP files that contain simple text. However, patch files can also be used to patch language INI files, and these can often contain UTF-8 characters. There is a known problem when you try to apply a patch with UTF-8 characters using Eclipse. The patch file may show errors when you try to apply it. One possible work-around to this problem is to copy the file to your clipboard and then in the Patch Input Specification in Eclipse, select Clipboard instead of File. Note that the preview for the patched files may show question marks for the UTF-8 characters, but the patch will apply correctly.

You can check that the patch did apply correctly by using the Compare With→Base Revision feature in Eclipse.

Introduction to node.js at Webtuesday

March 11th, 2010 php No comments

At this weeks WebTuesday in the AdNovum offices in Zurich I presented node.js, the much talked about framework for writing event driven servers in JavaScript. It’s an interesting approach to develop asynchronous applications with completely non-blocking input/output without the headaches this usually involves. From our perspective it’s especially an interesting tool to develop the server side of Comet-like applications in a language that most developers are already familiar with.

You can find the slides containing an introduction to event loops in general and a few code examples on slides.liip.ch.

I am Nikon dot com

March 4th, 2010 Techno Wizkid No comments

If you go to iamnikon.com you will get a blank page, but if you go to iamnikon.com/images you will get a redirect to europe-nikon.com. Nikon is definitely preparing a new website. The question is whether there will be a real product behind the marketing campaign in France and the “Press Morning” in the UK or just a new website.

The same “I am Nikon” web site exists also in German language ichbinnikon.at and ichbinnikon.at/images also redirects to europe-nikon.com.

If you Google “I am Nikon” you will see few more redirects.

Flickr also has a group called IamNikon which is private for now – maybe the new site will have something to do with Flickr?

IamNikon.com domain name is registered to Key-Systems which seems to be a regular domain reseller.

IchbinNikon.at domain name is registered to an advertising agency in Germany called JVM and of course Nikon is one of their clients (in English).

The news about Nikon working on a G11 killer may or may not be related with the current ongoing marketing campaign and this new website from Nikon.

As of today, I have not received any information about upcoming Nikon products.

I found the above image in one of Nikon’s PDF files – this is the Coolpix S8000.

Tables sortable

February 28th, 2010 php No comments

New page

To be able to ”’sort tables”’ is a nice feature, just take a look at one here:
http://www.liv-laga.no/index.php/helsetjenestene/ansvarlige-myndigheter/fodested

It’s not hard to do, if you follow the instructions here. It’s taken/inspired from ”’http://friedcellcollective.net/js/SortedTable/”’

Use Dreamweaver or some similar program for editing and uploading.

Put the following three ”’JavaScripts”’ on the site, for instance in the ”js-folder” under your current template.
http://www.liv-laga.no/templates/ja_edenite/js/SortedTable.js
http://www.liv-laga.no/templates/ja_edenite/js/Event.js
http://www.liv-laga.no/templates/ja_edenite/js/ekstra.js

To make sure the necessary things show up in every article, you have to tell ”’index.php”’ to include them. You may use the index.php in your template folder.

Line 35:
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript" src="<?php echo $tmpTools->templateurl(); ?>/js/SortedTable.js"></script>
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript" src="<?php echo $tmpTools->templateurl(); ?>/js/Event.js"></script>
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript" src="<?php echo $tmpTools->templateurl(); ?>/js/ekstra.js"></script>

Then edited the ”’css”’ in a separate file (call it tabell.css) and edited the index.php again. Line 31:
<link rel="stylesheet" href="<?php echo $tmpTools->templateurl(); ?>/css/tabell.css" type="text/css" />

http://www.liv-laga.no/templates/ja_edenite/css/tabell.css

To avoid that the footer moves to beside the table, put the table inside a ”’div”’ included in the tabell.css:
<pre>
<div>
<caption> Fødesteder i Norge, kan sorteres, klikk på overskrift </caption> <thead>
<tr>
<th>Nordmøre og Romsdal</td>
<td axis="string" headers="institusjon">Kristiansund</td>
<td axis="string" headers="navn"></td>
<td axis="string" headers="type">Fødeavd</td>
<td axis="number" headers="2007">397</td>
<td axis="number" headers="2008">422</td>
<td axis="string" headers="adr"><a href="http://www.helsenr.no/templates/StandardMaster____100099.aspx">Nettside</a></td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td axis="string" headers="RHF">Midt</td>
<td axis="string" headers="HF">Nordmøre og Romsdal</td>
<td axis="string" headers="institusjon">Molde</td>
<td axis="string" headers="navn"></td>
<td axis="string" headers="type">Fødeavd</td>
<td axis="number" headers="2007">563</td>
<td axis="number" headers="2008">542</td>
<td axis="string" headers="adr"><a href="http://www.helsenr.no/templates/StandardMaster____100100.aspx">Nettside</a></td>
</tr>
(…)
</tbody>
</table>
</div>
</pre>
If you make the table in ”’Excel”’, just copy it to Dreamweaver. Then use the ”Find and replace to” remove unnecessary code and add new code. Add axis="string" to all td. Then copy the columns with numbers to a new file, and replaced string with number. Then mark the column (not the entire table) and copy-past it back to the original table. Use the same solution to add the headers to each td, copy one column at the time. You define the headers in the top row, <thead>
