Entertain Yourself: Jamo A 804 Speakers

March 9th, 2010 Techno Wizkid No comments

In part 1 of our Entertain Yourself series we took a look at the Sony BRAVIA NX800 3D HDTV. It’s our pick for amazing picture quality, industrial design, and packs a wallop of future proof technologies to take you far beyond 2010. Tho the built-in speakers are a wonder in themselves we wanted dedicated speakers. Last year we came across the Jamo A 804 and have been in love ever since.

A beautiful television demands an equally beautiful speaker system. If you take a look at what’s available on the market, speakers are either 80’s industrial boxes or beautifully crafted modern exercises. The former is all performance with no thought to design and the latter is just the opposite, too much design with subpar acoustics. Is there a happy medium?

Take one look at the A 804 – it’s gorgeous! The piano black finish is accented with black leather; fluidic yet technical in appearance. The size is dominating but well suited to Sony’s new monolithic design aesthetic. It’s absolutely stunning and only enhances the entertainment area. Speakers don’t have to be hidden. They can be proudly displayed and the A 804 is more than capable of holding its own amongst the best hardware makers and designers in the industry.

Prior to installing the A 804, we were using a Yamaha Sound Bar which we LOVE. The simulated 5.1 audio system is just the ticket for something better than stereo. The A 804 can function as a single, double, or a full on 5+ speaker setup and it’s the versatility that’ll make any audio guru happy. Unlike other speaker systems, you don’t need a full blown out package to get massive sound. We only have two A 804’s and a subwoofer and we’re more than elated. You will need a receiver to drive the speakers. We’re using a Pioneer model but even when hooked up to a small Denon unit, the sound was full, crisp, and balanced between the high, mids, and lows.

The A 804 is a 3-way, bassreflex speaker. The rigid cabinet constructed from high-gloss, lacquered aluminum, steel and high-density polymer results in a stable, non-resonant cabinet with very clean sound reproduction. One of the secrets of the A 804 lies in its flow-optimized bass port, which delivers extremely clean bass, even at high volume. The silk dome midrange/tweeter is a Jamo developed co-axial unit featuring WaveGuide technology. The clever three-way construction of the A 804 produces a perfect sound dispersion pattern, giving you maximum freedom when positioning your flatscreen, surround system and sofa. Its hard to visualize but sit anywhere around the TV and you never hear the sound drop off. It’s continuous and rich from the farthest corner of our seating arrangement. Sitting dead center is no longer the hottest seat in the house. Everyone gets to enjoy the almost pliable audio experience.

It Binds the Galaxy Together

February 3rd, 2010 Techno Wizkid No comments

Welcome to what you might call tomorrows… business card? This post features an exercise in mobile device brainstorming under the title “Tie.” Each of the pictures in this project is an interactive version of what folks pass around today. Maybe it’s just the simpler version of the smartphone. Or maybe… it’s something completely new! Devour, chew on, spit out, taste, nibble on these images. Tie them all together.

Designer Daniel Cane is particularly vague, or maybe you’d call it all-encompassing, when he describes this project. What it’s identified by is its innovation in solving the social puzzle that is tomorrows business communications market. What it will supposedly do is allow companies to “better express their brand equities” and lets individuals have “more control over their relationships and identities.”

What it runs on is up to you. It relies on the technology of the day. Using existing mobile devices custom hardware units and software interfaces, this “Tie” aims to innovate. That’s the idea!

Before you ask “but what is it?” Note: It’s basically a sketchbook of ideas for the future of social interaction and mobile communication. Quite simply.

As they appear below:

1 ) Backlit display, card size.

2 ) Couture, wood paneling.

3 ) Couture, suede paneling.

4 ) Dynamic, bent display.

5 ) Dynamic, bent display flattens for easier stowing.

6 ) Express, elastomer interaction points.

7 ) Resist, protective elastomer overmoulding.

8 ) Resist, brushed metal casting.

The Google Phone Finally Arrives as The Nexus One

January 6th, 2010 Techno Wizkid No comments

To virtually no one’s surprise, Google unveiled its new Android-powered Nexus One smartphone. Oh, excuse me… superphone. Looking similar to the touchscreen Droid Eris (also manufactured by HTC), the Nexus One is a bit slimmer and features a powerful under-the-hood engine in the form of a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Other top line specs include a 3.7-inch touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera, Wireless-N Wi-Fi networking, Bluetooth stereo capabilities.

It also runs the Android 2.1 operating system, which, according to Pocket-lint, adds “a few attractive UI changes including a choice of Live Wallpapers, with which you can interact; a change to a five screen homepage with short cuts; the removal of the slideout app menu for a rolling 3D interface and a more responsive on-screen keyboard.”

Of course, being a superphone, it runs on 3G networks–but not AT&T’s. The cellular radio inside the Nexus One is geared toward T-Mobile’s AWS-specific frequencies as well as 900/2100 MHz frequencies found outside the U.S. Thusly, while the GSM Nexus One will run on AT&T, it can only connect to the dial-up-like speeds of its EDGE data network. And the current unlocked version will not work currently on either Verizon Wireless or Sprint in the U.S.

Google will be selling the phone unlocked through its own portal for $530 (where you can add some personalized engraving to the back; see image at right) and it will also be available as a subsidized phone through T-Mobile first for $180. It will be added later in the spring to Verizon Wireless in the U.S. (via a special CDMA version of the Nexus One) as well as Vodafone in Europe (specific launch dates and pricing were not announced today). Of course, for those Verizon customers who can’t wait for the latest in Android goodness, there’s always the Motorola Droid, which will be getting an update to the 2.1 operating system soon.

Walt Mossberg has had his hands on a Nexus One for a couple weeks now, and he posts his first positive impressions over at All Things Digital:

The Nexus One finally has the right combination of hardware and software to give Android a champion that might attract more people away from their iconic iPhones and BlackBerrys. It has a larger screen than Apple’s phone, and is a bit thinner, narrower and lighter—if a tad longer. And it boasts a better camera and longer talk time between battery charges.

Also, because it will be available on the large, well-regarded Verizon 3G network, the Nexus One could tempt American iPhone users, tired of problems with AT&T, to switch.

A side note: While it’s true that I’m an Apple guy to the core (to the point where I get quite chuffed hearing my toddler announce that “the iPhone wins the race” in his imagined gadget races), there’s something to be said for Apple’s secrecy-fueled flair for the dramatic and its stagecraft when presenting new releases. I followed this morning’s official rollout of the Google Nexus One smartphone via Gizmodo and others, and was rather surprised at how lo-fi their presentation looked.

Driftwood Table! Driftwood Table!

December 11th, 2009 Techno Wizkid No comments

For years now, people who buy hand-made goods have been pumped up about weathered wood. Barnwood! Shackwood! And the mother of them all, really nice Driftwood! Driftwood is, as you can imagine, wood that’s ideally taken off nice old buildings and thrown in the river for one reason or another, then found by some intrepid craftsperson like the people we’ve got right here. It’s the Flotsam and Jetsam table!

Designers at Marcus O’Reilly Architects have really pumped up their hands, sandpaper, and screws to bring you this fabulous table. Made from REAL driftwood found on the beaches of St Kilda. Each bit of wood was trimmed to size, wire brushed, coloured, waxed, and placed on a minimal raw black steel frame.

“Unique markings, stamps, holes and hardware in the wood alludes to the origins of each individual piece of driftwood.” – that’s what I like to hear. This is recycling at it’s most beautiful.

And check it out, this table has already won an award: Craft Victoria Design and Innovation Award for 2009, and just got done being exhibited: Melbourne’s 2009 Fringe Furniture Festival, and is about to be exhibited again!: The Edge in Sydney, AND it was featured in Craft Victoria’s “Encounter.”

So get out there and make some stuff!
